Sir Alex Ferguson’s brilliant beginning of the season prediction of the most impressive Premier League team has comprehensively come true.

On the opening weekend of the season, many Premier League fans were left scratching their heads after the former Manchester United boss made an incredibly bold prediction by backing one team who were on the end of a hammering.

But Fergie’s stunning prediction has certainly come true as Unai Emery’s Aston Villa have now taken the driving seat ahead of Tottenham Hotspur in the race to finish in the top four and secure Champions League football next season.

Ahead of Manchester United’s opening day win against Wolves, Fergie was asked which team he had been most impressed with in their opening game. And his answer drew raised eyebrows after Villa were beaten 5-1 by Newcastle United at St James’ Park.

“To be honest with you, I watched Aston Villa and Newcastle and I can’t believe the scoreline,” Ferguson said. “Aston Villa played some fantastic football and just lost bad goals.”

“Newcastle are going to be very difficult to beat in their own ground particular, the manager (Eddie Howe) has done a great job there. You can play teams off the pitch but don’t score, that’s why I’m going Aston Villa.

Since Fergie’s backing, Villa have climbed the table and were even briefly involved in an outside chance of challenging for the Premier League title after back-to-back wins against Manchester City and Arsenal. However, a run of just two league wins in six games prematurely ended that excitement.
