After spending more than a month on the open market, former Dallas Cowboys star wide receiver Michael Gallup has found a new team.
According to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Michael Gallup is signing a one-year contract with the Las Vegas Raiders. The contract carries a max value of $3 million for the former 1,000-yard wideout, per Schefter.
Gallup joins a new-look Las Vegas team that drastically shook up the offensive side of the ball this offseason. They moved on from 2022 rushing champion Josh Jacobs (signed with the Green Bay Packers in free agency), and released veteran quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and another former 1K receiver in Hunter Renfrow.
GM Tom Telesco signed journeyman QB Gardner Minshew II to a two-year deal and brought in ex-Minnesota Vikings RB Alexander Mattison. With the No. 13 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, Telesco selected Georgia Bulldogs star tight end Brock Bowers.
The 28-year-old Gallup had his best season in 2019, when he racked up 66 receptions for 1,107 yards and six touchdowns. For his career, Gallup has 266 catches for 3,744 yards and 21 touchdowns.
Michael Gallup Could Be A Bargain Signing For Raiders
There were two key reasons why Gallup has failed to get back to that star-like form we saw back in 2019. The first is injuries, and the second is the fact he played in an offense with other stars like CeeDee Lamb, Brandin Cooks, Amari Cooper, Dalton Schultz, Ezekiel Elliott and Tony Pollard.
Gallup still put up 843 yards in 2020 despite not having Dak Prescott (ankle injury) for most of the season. Gallup missed eight games in 2021 and three contests in 2022 because of injuries.
Now that he’s coming to Vegas, Gallup has the chance to rebuild his value and remind the league that he can still be a capable No. 2 receiver. Health will be a key factor here, but this is a savvy no-risk move by Vegas. If anything else, Gallup can be a nice depth piece for a Raiders passing game that has relied way too much on Davante Adams over the last two years.
