The Kansas City Chiefs are bringing a familiar face back for 2024 as they have re-signed running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire.
That is according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, who reports that the former first-round pick is returning to the team on a one-year deal.
The move gives the Super Bowl winners added depth behind Isiah Pacheco and comes on the same day they hosted free agent RB J.K. Dobbins.
Edwards-Helaire hasn’t quite lived up to the potential the Chiefs saw when they drafted him in 2020, with injuries blighting his first three seasons in the NFL. He had a fully healthy season in 2023 but was behind Pacheco following the latter taking over as the starter in 2022.
The former LSU star registered 223 rushing yards and one touchdown last term, adding 188 yards and another score from the air.
Injuries Have Made Clyde Edwards-Helaire’s Time With The Kansas City Chiefs Less Productive Than He Would Have Hoped
Edwards-Helaire, 24, led the Kansas City Chiefs in rushing as a rookie, logging 803 yards. However, he suffered hip and ankle injuries late in the season that left him worse for wear during the playoffs, with the Chiefs losing to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Super Bowl.
The RB missed six games in 2021 with a sprained MCL and ended the season with 517 yards.
He missed another seven games the following campaign due to a high-ankle sprain but had already lost his starting spot to Pachecho by then. The Chiefs went on to defeat the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl as he finished the season with 302 rushing yards.
Edwards-Helaire has averaged 4.2 yards per carry on 441 attempts in four seasons with the AFC supremos, registering totals of 1,845 yards and 12 touchdowns. He’s also made 89 receptions for 765 yards and seven TDs.
