One of the NFL’s best defensive-minded coaches is a free agent again…but not for long.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Jeremy Fowler, the Miami Dolphins and defensive coordinator Vic Fangio have agreed to part ways after just one season together. Schefter added that the Philadelphia Eagles are “expected” to hire Fangio for their vacant DC position.

 

The Eagles’ defensive coordinator position opened up earlier this week after Nick Sirianni fired Sean Desai. Then on Tuesday, Sirianni decided to fire offensive coordinator Brian Johnson as well.

Fangio actually spent the 2022 season as a consultant on the Eagles’ coaching staff following a three-year stint as the Denver Broncos’ head coach. He has also served as the defensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers (1995 to ’98), Indianapolis Colts (1991 to 2001), Houston Texans (2002 to ’05), San Francisco 49ers (2011 to 2014) and Chicago Bears (2015 to 2018).

The 65-year-old has a long history of churning out stingy championship-level defenses, but the Dolphins’ unit never came together under his watch. They finished a mere 22nd in scoring D (23.0 points allowed per game) and 15th against the pass despite the presences of superstar defensive backs Jalen Ramsey, Xavien Howard and Jevon Holland.

 

Now, it appears that Fangio will be tasked with rebuilding an Eagles defense that inexplicably fell apart one year after losing DC Jonathan Gannon, who left for the Arizona Cardinals’ head coaching position after last season.
