The Tennessee Titans have filled their head coaching vacancy, two weeks after the surprise decision to move on from Mike Vrabel.
Per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Titans are hiring Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Brian Callahan as their new head coach. Callahan completed his second interview with the Titans on Monday, and the AFC South club was clearly pleased enough at that point to strike a deal.
The 39-year-old Callahan was a hot candidate in this year’s NFL head coaching hiring cycle thanks to his success under head coach Zac Taylor. Even with Joe Burrow missing the final seven games, Callahan got excellent production out of Jake Browning, who went 4-3 as the starter with 12 touchdowns against seven interceptions.
Brian is the son of former Oakland Raiders head coach Bill Callahan, who led the team to a Super Bowl 37 appearance in the 2002 season. Before joining the Bengals in 2019, Callahan was the quarterbacks coach for the Detroit Lions (2016 to 2017) and Raiders (2018).
Callahan was also on the Denver Broncos’ coaching staff from 2010 to 2015, working under John Fox and later Gary Kubiak. Callahan was an offensive assistant for the Peyton Manning-led Broncos from 2013 to 2015, winning a Super Bowl 50 ring in the latter year.
The Titans finished a disappointing 6-11 on the year, marking their worst record since 2015. With Callahan replacing Vrabel as head coach, it’s a brand new era of football in Music City.
