As you know by now, a video surfaced Sunday that appears to show 2015 NFL MVP Cam Newton involved in a scuffle at a 7-on-7 youth football tournament in Atlanta.
The incident occurred at a 7-on-7 football event hosted by We Ball Sports, an apparel and sports media company. The scuffle ensued the day after a “heated game” between Newton’s C1N under-18 team and TopShelf Performance’s under-18 team.
That was a bad moment but it shouldn’t cast a bad light on what he has been doing for the youth since he’s been drafted into the league.
His positive work in the community shouldn’t be ignored.
He feels the same and took it a step further, claiming that no NFL athlete has impacted the community more than him.
“Name me another NFL athlete that impacted the community more than I did,” he told former NFL player Brandon Marshall in a clip and accompanying written interview published by Complex Sports.
He continued: “(A lot guys) came through my 7-on-7 program. Justin Fields, Deshaun Watson Bo, Nix, George Pickens like Cam Sutton. I don’t want nothing from the kids. That’s the thing, like I’m putting them on game. I’ve spent time, money, effort, energy for them at 15, 16 years old. It’s like this is how you’re supposed to do it when you get in my position.”
“Put it like this, so I’ve been doing this for 15 years now. Every year. We have a tournament coming up this weekend, I’m gonna spend $25,000. We have around eight to nine tournaments this year. You do the math right there so around a quarter million dollars every year is invested in these kids.”
“I don’t want nothing from them. I never told somebody where to go to school. I never told nobody where to sign an agent. But they try to make me out to be a bitter ass football player but not knowing like, bro, I’m really giving time, effort, and energy. These kids are staying at my house.”
Despite his contributions, recent headlines have focused on a physical altercation at one of Newton’s tournaments. Cam has yet to speak out about it.
In the meantime, Cam Newton has not given up on his NFL career.
Newton is still considered a free agent after missing the entire 2022 and 2023 NFL seasons. The former No. 1 overall pick returned to the Carolina Panthers for a brief second stint in 2021, signing with the franchise for its final eight games amid injuries at the quarterback position.
Newton has thrown for 32,382 yards, 194 touchdowns, and 123 interceptions, as well as recorded 5,628 rushing yards and 75 rushing touchdowns, the most by any quarterback in NFL history, during his career.
