Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes met with reporters on Wednesday at KC’s voluntary OTAs.
The superstar quarterback, unsurprisingly, is fully participating in OTAs as the 2023 Chiefs build their identity this summer.
Mahomes was asked a litany of questions by reporters, including a question about a sensitive/controversial topic.
Earlier this offseason, Mahomes’ brother, Jackson, was arrested on charges of aggravated sexual battery.
From ESPN: Mahomes, 22, was booked into Johnson County (Kansas) Detention Center on a $100,000 bond at 8:42 a.m. ET Wednesday, according to online records. He has been charged with three counts of aggravated sexual battery and an additional fourth count of battery.
….Police in Overland Park, Kansas, confirmed to KCTV5 in Kansas City, Missouri, that the arrest stemmed from a woman’s accusation that Mahomes assaulted her in February.
Surveillance video published Wednesday by TMZ appears to show Mahomes kissing a woman while his hands are grasping her neck. The 40-year-old woman, who is the owner of Aspens Restaurant and Lounge in Overland Park, also accused Mahomes of shoving a member of the restaurant’s waitstaff in a separate incident.
Mahomes was asked on Wednesday how he’s handling the situation with Jackson.
“Honestly, it’s kind of a personal thing that I just kind of want to keep to myself,” said Mahomes. “I mean, at the end of the day, I come here to play football and try to take care of my family at the same time. So just kind of keep it to myself and just go out there and play football when I’m in the building.”
“I think it’s more it’s a process everyone has to navigate in life,” added Mahomes when asked how he decides what to keep private. “Obviously, I’m on a bigger stage. But at the same time, it’s your family. But you have to come in here and do a job and that’s what I try to do every day.”
There’s no doubt that the situation with Jackson is a delicate subject for Mahomes. But he handled the questions from the media as perfectly as any superstar player could. And Chiefs fans should feel confident that whatever goes on with Jackson this offseason won’t be a distraction for Mahomes and the rest of the team.
