Adam Schefter is taking some major heat for what he posted to X on Thursday.
The Chargers on Thursday confirmed they have interviewed David Shaw for their head coach position. Los Angeles had an in-person interview with David Shaw, the team announced Thursday.
When ESPN’s Adam Schefter announced the interview, he added an extra part to it that rubbed people the wrong way.
“Chargers completed an interview with David Shaw for their head coaching job,” Schefter wrote. They’re now in compliance with the Rooney Rule.”
Schefter followed-up that post with these remarks: “Former Stanford HC David Shaw has long been a target of NFL teams. In the past, he has resisted NFL overtures. But now, in back-to-back years, he has been interviewed for the Broncos and Chargers head coaching jobs.”
He attempted to save what he said but the damage was already done with the first tweet.
Here is how fans reacted:
Prior to this, Shaw was a Stanford coach from 2011 until 2022. When Harbaugh departed the institution in 2011 to take a head coaching position with the San Francisco 49ers, he was Harbaugh’s replacement.
Additionally, Shaw served as Harbaugh’s offensive coordinator at Stanford (2007–2010) and University of San Diego (2006).
Earlier this week, Harbaugh was interviewed by the Chargers for their head coaching position as well.
This is the second known NFL interview in as many seasons for Shaw. He interviewed for the Denver Broncos head coaching job last year before the team decided to trade for head coach Sean Payton.
Shaw compiled a 96-54 record in 12 seasons at Stanford. He is the winningest head coach in program history.
