Prince Harry and Meghan Markle prove it’s expensive to be royal even in America as they live in a mansion that costs £11million and frequently take private jets with their own security detail

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle might be enjoying a billionaire’s lifestyle with designer outfits and private jets but a royal expert claims they “are aware money is disappearing fast”.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex live in a lavish mansion in Montecito, California with their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. The couple’s nine-bedroom mansion is thought to be worth £11million and the couple live close to celebrities including Oprah Winfrey, Ellen DeGeneres and Katy Perry.

The couple have huge outgoings with costs including security, private travel, and designer outfits – Meghan wore an outfit worth more than £3,300 in a surprise visit to a children’s hospital. And now a royal expert claims the couple are acutely aware of the money pouring out.

“Harry and Megan certainly have enough money for now to carry on with their Royal lifestyle in America, but the launch of the new brand suggests that they are aware that the money is disappearing fast,” royal expert and author Tom Quinn exclusively tells us.

“They live among mega-rich celebrities in Montecito, and Meghan is determined to live as they live. The idea they might have to make choices about what they can and cannot afford fills the couple with horror. This is why whatever happens to Kate and King Charles, the new brand will not be neglected.”

The Duchess of Sussex launched her long-awaited lifestyle brand – thought to be The Tig 2.0, a reimagining of her now-defunct lifestyle blog that she shut down in 2017 as she prepared to marry Prince Harry – on March 14. Appearing in a promotional video posted to Instagram, Meghan baked in her kitchen and tended to her dog in a ballgown with the backdrop of her sprawling Montecito mansion. Media outlets around the world couldn’t get enough and clamoured to report details of the new brand from the stylish Duchess.

Just a week later Princess Kate announced in a video message that she is being treated for cancer. In an emotional and heartfelt televised statement to the world confirming her diagnosis, Kate spoke of “an incredibly tough couple of months for our entire family”. The news agenda quickly shifted to Kate’s brave decision to go public with her health battle, and the Princess of Wales has dominated the news agenda since.

But despite the awkward timing, Meghan is expected to forge ahead with her new business. “Meghan will be trying to find a way to continue with her new brand, but in a less full-on manner than she might’ve attempted had Kate not announced her illness – we will see less of Harry too as the brand launches because he is a reminder that all is not well in the couple’s relationship with Kate and King Charles at such a difficult time,” Quinn says.
