Director Louis Leterrier teases a significant character shift for Jason Momoa’s Fast Saga villain, Dante when he returns in Fast & Furious 11.
SUMMARY
Director Louis Leterrier teases that Jason Momoa’s character Dante will evolve in Fast & Furious 11, exploring something new we haven’t seen before.
Dante’s flamboyant and dramatic personality make him a fun and enjoyable villain to watch in Fast X.
Changing Dante to be a more serious character in Fast & Furious 11 may not be a good idea, as his playful villainy is considered by many to be the best part of Fast X.
Director Louis Leterrier teases Jason Momoa’s Dante will evolve in Fast & Furious 11. In an unexpected plot twist, franchise villain Cipher suddenly teams up with Dom and his crew in Fast X as they face a common enemy. The introduction of Dante in the film marked the beginning of a new era for the expanded Torreto clan, with Hernan Reyes’ son laying out a grand plan to seek revenge for the death of his father in Fast Five.
The end of Fast X sets up the events of Fast & Furious 11, but despite being a direct sequel, Leterrier teases some changes, especially with Dante. In a new interview with Empire, the filmmaker hints at a new direction for Momoa’s villain when he returns to the big screen for the next Fast Saga film. Read his full quote below:
Let’s do something else. It’s never twice the same with Jason. Dante will truly evolve. Let’s explore something we haven’t seen before.
He was fuelled by vengeance. He could have played it dark, angry. But it was interesting to play with the duality and the push-pull within the character, where within the same sentence he’s laughing and feels the pain of losing everything. Only an actor like Jason could have done that.
Why Jason Momoa’s Dante Was The Best Part Of Fast X
Although Fast X marks Dante’s first physical appearance in the Fast Saga, he has long ties to the franchise. As part of the movie’s many retcons, its elaborate flashback from the Brazillian bridge action scene in Fast Five reveals that he was part of the chase that ultimately ended Hernan’s life. Since then, Momoa’s character has been plotting his revenge against Dom and his team, which he started to execute in Fast X and will continue in Fast & Furious 11.
Unlike previous villains in the Fast Saga, Dante is flamboyant and dramatic, which makes him so much fun to watch. It also creates an interesting dynamic with Dom, who is mostly serious and stoic. Momoa plays the character with panache and sass, and it seems like he really enjoys that approach. Given this, it’s curious how they are going to change him when he returns in Fast & Furious 11.
Changing Dante to be a more serious character in Fast & Furious 11 may not be a good thing. His playful villainy is one of, if not the best parts of Fast X, so taking that away could backfire. That being said, making him darker and more sinister could actually work, especially since it sets up a more intense face-off between him and Dom.
