Dak Prescott may be heading into his last season with the Dallas Cowboys as Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported the Cowboys and Prescott have a “mutual understanding” regarding his contract situation, and there is “no indication” an extension will be reached.
Dak Prescott is heading into the final season of a four-year, $160 million deal and he cannot be franchise-tagged next offseason, meaning the Cowboys are seemingly willing to allow him to hit unrestricted free agency.
USA Today’s K.D. Drummond has a viable replacement should Dak decide to head elsewhere.
A much cheaper option for the team could come in the form of a former Super Bowl champion and that is new Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson.
“Trey Lance, already in Dallas, is in a group of haven’t-yet-established guys along with Justin Fields who is now in Pittsburgh,” Drummond wrote in a March 19, 2024 story titled, “It may be time for Cowboys to focus on 2025, so here’s the plan.” “What if Russell Wilson bounces back with the Steelers? He’s a free agent after next year as well.
“Arizona’s Kyler Murray becomes tradeable in 2025 with a dead cap hit to the Cardinals of $33 million and $12 million of savings if traded, and he has no guaranteed money remaining after that season for the acquiring club.”
Russell Wilson agreed to sign a 1-year deal with the Steelers. It was always expected that whichever team recruited Wilson’s services wouldn’t have to break the bank to do so.
Should he not play up to standard during the 2024 season, he just might take his talents to the Dallas Cowboys.
Dak Prescott Could Leave The Dallas Cowboys In Free Agency
The Cowboys not extending Prescott seems implausible since he carries a $55.5 million cap hold for the 2024 season, ranking second in the NFL behind Deshaun Watson. not only that, the Cowboys would also take on a $40.4 million dead cap hit if they allow Prescott to hit free agency, per Spotrac.
In 2023, Prescott shut a lot of critics up by performing like an MVP candidate. He threw for 4,516 yards and led the NFL with 36 passing touchdowns while throwing nine interceptions.
If he doesn’t get the contract he wants after this way, there will be a long list of suitors for his services.
