As a former sixth-round draft pick who earned seven Pro Bowl nods, six First-team All-Pro selections and a Super Bowl 52 ring, Jason Kelce should feel practically no regrets on how his NFL career played out.
Kelce was drafted 191st overall by the Philadelphia Eagles back in 2011. Fast forward 13 years later, and this Philadelphia sports icon just hung up the cleats on a historic career that will surely place him in Canton one day.
During a new episode of the “New Heights” podcast he co-hosts with younger brother Travis Kelce (h/t Matt Ehalt of the New York Post), Jason revealed that there’s one regret about his playing career as he heads into retirement.
“The one thing I’m disappointed about retiring right now is I’m retiring when the Eagles had potentially the biggest collapse in the history of the organization. Not potentially, probably the most…The reason I say that I’m upset about that is — I really truly think the Eagles are going to ball out next year.”
The defending NFC Champions avoided the infamous Super Bowl hangover and jumped out to a 10-1 start, seemingly poised to finish as the conference’s top seed again. But they proceeded to drop five of their final six regular season games, including ugly blowout losses to the San Francisco 49ers and Dallas Cowboys in back-to-back weeks in December.
The Eagles were favored in their Wild Card Round matchup against the 9-8 Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but Baker Mayfield and company cruised to a 32-9 blowout victory. With that, one of the all-time great late-season collapses was now complete.
Kelce retired at the top of his game, and now the Eagles must find a way to bounce back from last year’s miserable without the heart and soul of their offense.
