The Lakers star LeBron James recently expressed his thoughts on the 2-for-1 shots in the NBA. He explained how it disturbed the flow of the NBA games. Former NBA star JJ Reddick who was also present with Bron also joined the Bron on his stance.
The two-for-one tactic has been around in the NBA for a long time and a lot of teams have used it to decide their games. However, LeBron begs to differ from the general opinion and stays strong in his stance of it spoiling the flow of the game.
JJ Redick, LeBron James explain why 2-for-1 shots ruins NBA games
LeBron James appeared on the “Mind the Game” podcast where he talked about a lot of things. One of those topics was Bron’s opinion on what killed the game for him. “Imma tell you what Kills me… the two-for-one shot,” said Bron. The Lakers star then proceeded to explain how the common strategy widely used by the basketball teams at the end of final quarters kills the flow of the game. He gave a great example of the strategy of breaking the momentum of the team going into the second quarter.
JJ Reddick jumped in LeBron’s wagon and supported the Lakers star’s stance. He highlighted his new role as a broadcaster and the advantage of being able to see the game from a different perspective than the players. “I think it does f**k with the flow of the game,” said Redick supporting Bron. The former NBA star then proceeded to give an example of his own to describe his point. He made up a hypothetical situation of a game in the final moments of the second quarter. Redick then explained how it is always a good choice to go with a pick-and-roll that has worked in the game instead of a 2-for-1 shot as the former would provide a momentum boost to the team after halftime.
In-depth explanation of the NBA’s 2-for-1 strategy
The 2-for-1 strategy has been a very commonly used tactic in the game of basketball worldwide. In theory, it allows a team to have two shots in the final moments of a game while their opponents can only get one shot. To state it more simply, it is a strategy in the final minutes of a game where a team manages the clock to get the final shot of the game.

For example, if the score is 86-84 with just 40 seconds left on the clock. The ball is in the hand of the trailing team, let us call them Team A. According to the strategy, team A will try to score a basket within 10 seconds or less. If they score it then they would have used up only 10 seconds. In their opponent’s turn now, team B, there would be 24 seconds to score before the shot clock expires. The defense will then attempt to either steal the ball or play safe defense to prevent them from scoring. Whether team B scores or not is a different case. But after that, team A will have six seconds to put up the final shot to tie or win the game.
