The Dallas Cowboys have decided to stick with Mike McCarthy as the team’s head coach for the 2024-25 season. This will be the last year of McCarthy’s current contract with the Cowboys, and his future is going to remain contingent on the outcome of the team’s performance next year. Jerry Jones was scheduled to meet McCarthy this week after the Cowboys’ monumental loss to the Packers in the wildcard round.
Adam Schefter announced via X (formerly known as Twitter) that Jerry Jones and the Cowboys have decided to give him another shot. Following Dallas’ horrific performance earlier this week, Mike McCarthy’s job was believed to be as good as gone. The team lost at home to a Green Bay Packers team that was not viewed as a threat to them by many.
The notion was that since there were better options available at HC such as Bill Belichick or Jim Harbaugh, Jerry Jones would be inclined to move over Mike McCarthy and consider other candidates for the job.
Mike McCarthy’s record with the Cowboys in the playoffs is 1-3
Mike McCarthy’s talk with Jerry Jones was set to be more like a job interview rather than a regular briefing. It seems like the HC was successful in wooing the owner and convincing him to give him another shot.
It is quite surprising because McCarthy is 1-3 in the playoffs with Dallas. This year, the team had its best shot at making a deep playoff run after nearly three decades. To see it end abruptly was unexpected and shocking for fans.

Jerry Jones justified his decision by releasing a statement:
I believe this team is very close and capable of achieving our ultimate goals and the best step forward for us will be with Mike McCarth…”Mike has the highest regular season winning percentage of any Head Coach in Cowboys history and we will dedicate ourselves, in partnership with him to translating that into reaching our postseason goals…
Jerry Jones statement on X.Jerry Jones held the entire team accountable in his statement. He made it clear that Mike McCarthy alone cannot be blamed for the team’s playoff loss. With this decision, Jones is letting an opportunity of a lifetime go by not considering Bill Belichick or other solid candidates who can most certainly make an immediate impact on this team and help lead it to where Jones has been itching to go, the Super Bowl.
