Andy Reid is in position to win plenty more Super Bowl championships with Patrick Mahomes as his starting quarterback. But might the future Hall of Famer decide to walk away if his Chiefs win their second title in four years?

Reid has never publicly given any indicators that he’s looking to step away from football in the immediate future. But one AFC scout told ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler that they could see the Super Bowl 54-winning head coach step away if the Chiefs hoist the Lombardi Trophy at State Farm Stadium in 19 days’ time.

“I just think at some point he could make the life decision to walk away from the grind,” the scout told Fowler. “I could at least see it.”

Last August, Reid indicated that he plans to continue coaching for a long time. But if he ultimately decides to walk away after this season, he wouldn’t be the first notable coach to retire in the midst of his prime while on a Super Bowl contender. Bill Walsh and Bill Cowher are among the notable examples who come to mind.

The Chiefs have never suffered a losing season under Reid, who took over the head coaching position in 2019. They’ve made the playoffs all but one year (2014) under his guidance, and they’ll play in their fifth straight AFC Championship Game against the Cincinnati Bengals this Sunday.
