Following the news that former Wizards of Waverly Place stars Selena Gomez and David Henrie are reprising their roles in a new Disney Channel sequel series, fans of the original show can’t help but wonder which other familiar faces might appear (as if by magic!) in the project.
Tentatively titled Wizards, the new show is a continuation of the original sitcom, which aired from 2007 to 2012. Both Gomez and Henrie are executive-producing, but only Henrie is expected to remain a regular if the pilot is picked up to series, whereas Gomez is only guest-starring in the first episode.
So, which other Russo family members could be joining Justin and Alex? According to Henrie, the possibilities are endless. In response to a concerned fan’s comment on his original Instagram announcement, Henrie replied, “We definitely plan on bringing back the original cast for the series order.”
In other words, if Disney Channel orders the pilot to series (which it absolutely will), we can feasibly expect guest appearances from any of the original cast members: David DeLuise as Jerry, Maria Canals Barrera as Theresa, Jake T. Austin as Max or Jennifer Stone as Harper. We also wouldn’t be surprised if some of the original show’s recurring characters — including Juliet (Bridgit Mendler) and Mason (Gregg Sulkin) — make an appearance or two.
DeLuise, who co-hosts a rewatch podcast with Stone, has already responded on Instagram, telling a curious fan, “It’s a sequel not a reboot. They’re shooting a pilot and if it goes to series, I would love to reprise the role of Jerry Russo.”
Wizards picks up after a mysterious incident at boarding school WizTech, where Justin has left his wizard powers behind and opted for a normal, human life with his wife and two sons. But according to Disney Channel’s official logline, “Justin gets a surprise when a powerful young wizard in need of training shows up at his door, and he must embrace his past to ensure the future of the Wizard World.”
That young wizard, named Billie, will be played by Janice LeAnn Brown (Just Roll With It); Justin’s oldest son Roman will be played by Alkaio Thiele (Marvel’s Spidey and His Amazing Friends); and Justin’s wife Giada will be played by Mimi Gianopulos (Rutherford Falls).
